Session 6 Aug 9 thru 13 FINAL SESSION

CAMP KADIMA WEEKLY ACTIVITIES
Mishpacha Memo

Once upon a time in the small town of Sunol the rabbis had the last word. Rabbi Laura, Rabbi Manhoff, Rabbi Rick and Rabbi Schulman are coming to Kadima this week to share some of their favorite Jewish books with the campers. After introducing new stories and authors to the campers, the rabbis will help the children find the morals in these specifically Jewish tales. Throughout the week the camp staff will help your campers create an entirely different story, probably with a secular plot, setting and cast of characters, that shares the same moral. Our goal this week at camp is to help your children understand that sometimes books and stories present Jewish morals without being specifically Jewish stories; Jewish learning happens everywhere. Please help reinforce this lesson at home while reading together with your camper. Our community rabbis will join us for our Shabbat celebration, on Friday at 2:45pm, to see how the campers did in their retellings of the morals taught earlier in the week. Please join us for our final Shabbat of the season.

However, the campers at Camp Kadima were devastated because they worried that they would not have the opportunity to read and learn from the amazing stories of Patricia Polacco. But have no fear; the Book Brigade is on the case and will surely save the day. Please ask your camper about which Polacco story he or she read this week at camp and what values they “munched” on.
Once upon a time in the small town of Sunol campers read books that are “nom.” Like Tula, Camp Kadima’s very own book eating bookworm, our campers are going to get a chance to take a bite out of some great Jewish literature this week that all centers around fabulous foods. From learning about the relationship between American Jews and Chinese food to understanding how Matza Ball soup has become a national, non-denominational comfort food to examining the association between food and heritage through bagels, the kids at Kadima will read and cook to a deeper knowledge of “Jewish food.” Please ask your campers to share with you what they have discovered about food, their families and heritage. We look forward to sharing our new understanding of the relationship between food, people and books with you on Friday afternoon.

Once upon a time in the small town of Sunol a tree and the campers were happy. They were happy because they spent a week at Camp Kadima investigating about some of the different messages and themes in Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. Each eidah will read the story, learn from Silverstein’s timeless tale, and give back to the Camp Kadima community in its own way. The younger children will be exploring what it means to give without receiving anything in return while our older campers will be studying the importance of caring for our earth by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Please ask your campers to share what they have discovered about both The Giving Tree and how they can help make the world a better place. We look forward to meeting with you in front of the magic, purple book and introducing you to Tula, our very hungry bookworm on Friday afternoon.
